What to Expect from a Reiki Session

Trying something new, especially when it involves your health or your pet’s wellbeing, can bring up questions. This page is here to help you feel informed, comfortable, and prepared before your session.

Reiki at RENEW Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and always offered as a complement to medical or veterinary care. There is no right or wrong way to experience a session.

Preparing for your session

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for Reiki.

We do recommend that you:

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Eat and hydrate as you normally would

  • Arrive (or settle in, for distance sessions) with an open but pressure-free mindset

You’re welcome to bring questions, and you’re also welcome to simply rest.

A calm, supportive environment

In-person sessions take place in a quiet, intentionally calming space. You’ll be invited to sit comfortably or lie on your back, fully clothed.

Before beginning, we’ll briefly review:

  • Your comfort preferences

  • Any relevant context you’d like to share

  • Whether you prefer light touch or hands-off Reiki

Consent and comfort guide every session.

What the experience may feel like

Reiki sessions are gentle and typically very restful.

Many people report:

  • A sense of relaxation or calm

  • Feeling grounded or centered

  • A quiet mental “pause”

Some individuals notice subtle physical sensations such as warmth, lightness, or gentle shifts in awareness. Others simply rest quietly or even fall asleep.

Occasionally, people experience emotional release, such as feeling reflective or even crying. These responses are normal, temporary, and vary from person to person. It's always encouraged to allow these feelings and reactions to occur naturally. There is never judgement or embarrassment around what a client experiences.

There is no expected outcome and nothing you need to “do” during a session.

Aftercare and Integration

After a session, many clients feel relaxed, grounded, or emotionally lighter. Some notice changes immediately; others observe shifts over days to weeks.

It can be helpful to:

  • Drink water

  • Move gently

  • Allow space for rest if possible

There is no required aftercare routine — simply notice how you feel.

Gentle, consent-based care for animals

Reiki for animals is guided entirely by the pet’s comfort and responses.

During a session:

  • Pets are never restrained

  • Reiki is offered gently, often with hands hovering or gently touching the pet if they allow

  • Animals may move, rest, engage, or step away — all responses are respected

Many pet parents report their animals appearing calmer or more settled after sessions. As with humans, every pet responds differently.

Reiki for animals is always provided alongside veterinary care, never as a replacement.

Receiving Reiki from home

Distance Reiki sessions take place at a scheduled time. You (or your pet) do not need to be on a video call.

For people:

  • Choose a quiet, comfortable place to rest

  • You may sit, lie down, or go about gentle activities

For pets:

  • They may rest, play, or move freely during the session

Many clients find distance sessions equally calming and supportive, especially for busy schedules or sensitive animals.
